Military Fitness Tests: One Standard for All Maintaining a high level of physical fitness is just one of the many facets of military life. It may be the most important aspect to combat survival. This is a reality that the men and women of our Armed Forces live and deal with almost daily. Physical fitness is emphasized through biannual fitness testing conducted in all branches of the military. The Department of Defense (DoD) spent countless dollars studying and developing fitness tests that were not only unique to each branch of the military but fair and equitable to all. At the beginning of the integration of women into the military the DoD determined that men and women have very different physiological properties (Segal and Wechsler 3). To accommodate for these differences two test standards were designed. Do these test standards accurately measure one’s physical ability to perform combat related tasks? Are they accurate measures of the physical abilities of both men and women? These are important questions as women are integrated into jobs that were previously men only. Because there are men and women of equal physical abilities the current military fitness test standards appear to be unfair and sexist. The DoD’s effort to be fair and equitable to both sexes inadvertently created a very interesting dilemma.
